When i started to go deeper into the Electronic music, at the begining of this new millenium, the first thing that struck me was all these styles of music and the messages they were sending to us. I was so impressed and inspired by the music that i spent all my free time i had talking about music and connecting with like minded people. Altough i liked house and trance music the most, other styles like deep house, jazzy-house and even downtempo music seemed so relevant to me because that was how we started and ended every night in clubs.
At the beggining of the night, when people are arriving, there is always some kind of deeper sounds and when they are on their way out, in the morning, there are downbeat sounds or something they can process after all that partying. My point is that each style of music has its own purpose for what it has been made for. U cant start the night at the club playing at 140 BPM unless its some kind of a rave gathering, but u also cant play slow tracks through the whole evening unless everybody is in their chairs and nobody even listens to music and everybody is socializing and the music isnt that loud so they can dance to it.
The thing is that u have to watch the crowd for what they respond to, and play the tunes that are most appropriate for every part of the night. Im not saying this as a rule because there are no rules when it comes to DJ-ing but its one of the things to consider when you go out to play and when you are making a playlist. Actually its all about preparation, and the rest is just showing up. If you come prepared and you have all the right tunes at the right place, and you know your tunes, and you know the people would love to hear your tunes, you would be on "track" most of the time.
