How To Get Back In Bussiness

Lets say u been DJ-ing before but u are stuck now or u don't have enough gigs or even u are new to DJ-ing but u have the music and u have all basic skills needed. The best way to get back or make a new begging is to start offering your sessions in bars and clubs for free because that is the quickest way! When u talk to club managers its always nice thing to have your own mixtape preferably with similiar style thats been played at that club and also there are tons of sites that offer free music hosting for DJ-s, one of the most popular sites are: soundcloud.com, mixcloud.com, mixcrate.com and so on. You need to leverage your DJ potential. If u are producing music in the studio that would also be an advantage but this is a shortcut because quality music requires a lot of studio time.

Creating The Playlist

When i started to go deeper into the Electronic music, at the begining of this new millenium, the first thing that struck me was all these styles of music and the messages they were sending to us. I was so impressed and inspired by the music that i spent all my free time i had talking about music and connecting with like minded people. Altough i liked house and trance music the most, other styles like deep house, jazzy-house and even downtempo music seemed so relevant to me because that was how we started and ended every night in clubs. At the beggining of the night, when people are arriving, there is always some kind of deeper sounds and when they are on their way out, in the morning, there are downbeat sounds or something they can process after all that partying. My point is that each style of music has its own purpose for what it has been made for. U cant start the night at the club playing at 140 BPM unless its some kind of a rave gathering, but u also cant play slow tracks through the whole evening unless everybody is in their chairs and nobody even listens to music and everybody is socializing and the music isnt that loud so they can dance to it. The thing is that u have to watch the crowd for what they respond to, and play the tunes that are most appropriate for every part of the night. Im not saying this as a rule because there are no rules when it comes to DJ-ing but its one of the things to consider when you go out to play and when you are making a playlist. Actually its all about preparation, and the rest is just showing up. If you come prepared and you have all the right tunes at the right place, and you know your tunes, and you know the people would love to hear your tunes, you would be on "track" most of the time.

A Quote From Josh Wink...

"Get into the game for the right reasons. Enjoy what you do. If what you do as a producer/dj seems like work and you find yourself complaining a lot. Then maybe it's time to really think about what you do. Life's too short to do things you don't want to do." - Josh Wink

There's nothing wrong with being into something for money, but there must be some easier way to get money other than DJ-ing or maybe even producing music because you will be rewarded for your work only if u give more than you can and that is done by loving and living your music. I didn't mean to scare you with this quote but this is especially true in the scene and also in all other parts of your life. By saying living your job i mean doing something that every succesfull artist/DJ does every day. It's about creating the lifestyle that will make it inevitable for you to have success in this part of your life, and that is done by creating rituals and habits that give you results.

Written In The Stones

First question is when u start playing the music for the people is to ask yourself why are u doing it? Many clubs  have specific genres of music thats being played in there, so that might be the worst or the best thing about that club. Having the courage to give the people a good time consistently through the night by playing interesting dance music sets and giving up the fear, attachment, and caring what other people think, you will actually be the next level DJ. Often times you just have to show the people what they need because what they think they want might not be the best thing!

Run It Like A Business

Everybody involved in DJ-ing should know that your job is to keep people dancing and that it is a job like every other job. My personal experience is that you should carefully select music styles for each part of the evening if u play whole night but if you are just one of the DJ's playing that night that might be a different story.
From my personal experience, i find these styles most suitable for keeping the crowd dancing: trance, progressive house and any kind of electronic dance music... You gotta be the pied piper with this!

Music Vibe

One of the keys to being succefull DJ is to learn how to let the music flow through you, in opposite of getting stuck on notes and songs in your head. If u learn this and it becomes your way of being you will play much better while enjoying the music you are playing. The byproduct of this is that the crowd will love it and you will inspire it.

Resident DJing

Every club DJ once in a while during his DJing career becomes a resident DJ in a club or venue and thats where the fun usually starts because there is consistent need for more an more good music that people can dance to. And because good music may be hard to find for some DJ's, they should keep in mind that every club that plays any kind of Dance-Pop or House music is in need for Madonna and Michael Jackson's tunes.
And while the playlist for every DJ is different and may be a personal thing my opinion is that every resident DJ should have these tunes.
